Way, way back a human put markings on a cave wall, then someone thought papyrus and other parchments would be better as they could be carried. Making marks with sticks and then the end of a feather (quill) progressed to a steel nib.
The fountain pen with nib was dipped in the ink, then came the pens that could be filled with ink and it flowed out the front, as they were filled with an eyedropper.
Roy Conklin invented a fountain pen that made filling very easy in 1891; the Crescent Filler®. He then founded the Conklin Pen Company in 1898.
Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens) was a professed admirer of the Crescent Filler® and in 1903 gave his endorsement to the ‘Crescent Filler fountain pen’, saying “it is a ‘profanity saver’, as this pen does not roll off of the desk and is so easy to refill.
“I prefer it to ten other fountain pens, because it carries its filler in its own stomach…”.
A very few of the Conklin Deco Crest Fountain and Ballpoint Pen are still available – a Limited Edition – only 98 of each design.
Made in Italy
Both the fountain pen and ballpoint come with a silver overlay with a design cut to show the resin of the pen. Fountain pen and ballpoint can be found with sterling silver overlay .925% and Rose Gold vermeil overlay over sterling silver .925%. Fountain pens come with 18kt gold German made nib, with the same markings as found on the original Conklin nibs, available in fine, medium or broad grades.
