Way, way back a human put markings on a cave wall, then someone thought papyrus and other parchments would be better as they could be carried.  Making marks with sticks and then the end of a feather (quill) progressed to a steel nib.

The fountain pen with nib was dipped in the ink, then came the pens that could be filled with ink and it flowed out the front, as they were filled with an eyedropper.

Roy Conklin invented a fountain pen that made filling very easy in 1891; the Crescent Filler®.  He then founded the Conklin Pen Company in 1898.

Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens) was a professed admirer of the Crescent Filler® and in 1903 gave his endorsement to the ‘Crescent Filler fountain pen’, saying “it is a ‘profanity saver’, as this pen does not roll off of the desk and is so easy to refill.

“I prefer it to ten other fountain pens, because it carries its filler in its own stomach…”.

A very few of the  Conklin Deco Crest  Fountain and Ballpoint Pen are still available – a Limited Edition – only 98 of each design.

 Made in Italy

Both the fountain pen and ballpoint come with a silver overlay with a design cut to show the resin of the pen.  Fountain pen and ballpoint can be found with sterling silver overlay .925% and Rose Gold vermeil overlay over sterling silver .925%.  Fountain pens come with 18kt gold German made nib, with the same markings as found on the original Conklin nibs, available in fine, medium or broad grades.

NIB SIZE NOW AVAILABLE IN STUB 1.1 ITALIC – INTRODUCING THE ALL NEW INNOVATION FROM MONTEVERDE & CONKLIN DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY STUDIOS

Posted by Mindy on October 27, 2011

Stub 1.1 Italic Nib

Now available for

Monteverde: Invincia, Regatta and Prima fountain pens

Conklin: with the exception of Symetrik fountain pens

“Enter my favorite nib …the stub!… and why I’m so happy to see it’s addition to the Monteverde and Conklin line-up. In simple terms, a stub is an italic nib with smooth, rounded edges. Hence, you achieve the beautiful, ‘shaded’ writing of an italic/calligraphy nib, but with the speed, smoothness and comfort of a conventional nib.

The Monteverde/Conklin stub nibs are 1.1 mm across, which is generally considered to be in the medium range.” (A testimonial submitted by Mr. Norman Haase of His Nibs.com)

INTRODUCING THE ALL-NEW CONKLIN GLIDER – CHASE DESIGN

Posted by Mindy on August 1, 2011

Conklin® Glider – Chase Design Collection

The latest addition to Conklin’s® legendary pen collection is the Glider Chase Design.  The process of Chasing is used to create a beautiful and fascinating decorative design and texture that is embedded into the surface of the pen’s material.  In the 1900s, most pens were made of hard black rubber.  Chasing became a popular process to add creative and intricate design to the otherwise common look of a simple black pen. The complicated and delicate hand engraving or chasing afforded talented artists the opportunity to show and display their unique abilities.  Since the Chasing process required excellent skills and was very time consuming, it added great value to the pen. The Chasing process is also known as Guilloché from the French word for the tool which was used to cut the engraved grooves into the material to create the hand-made design.

Today, pens are made from resins instead of hard rubber.  However, Conklin® is proud to offer a vintage Chase Design on black, coral and ivory resin that is worthy of the legendary Conklin® pen. The classic pattern selected is called Rick-Rack Chase Design, and was chosen because the wavy design is reminiscent of the famous “C” of the Conklin® name and logo. The Conklin® pen company is hard at work to re-create its original designs and offer modern pens with classic vintage flair.

The Conklin® Glider pens are available in both: twist-action ballpoint pen and cartridge/ converter Fountain Pens with Fine, Medium or Broad nibs.
